Zealandia pustulata (Syn. Microsorum diversifolium) , is a species of fern native to Australia and New Zealand. This plant belongs to the Polypodiaceae family and is widely prized for its beauty and hardiness, making it a popular choice for interior design and gardens.
Commonly found in moist woodland environments, where it thrives under the shade of surrounding vegetation, it has dark green, leathery leaves that grow directly from the underground rhizome. The leaves are characteristically jagged and have a shape that resembles the paws of a kangaroo, from which the common name derives. The surface of the leaves may have small protuberances, hence the specific name "pustulata".
This kangaroo fern can reach considerable dimensions, with leaves that can extend up to approximately 60-90 centimeters in length, creating a showy decorative effect, known for being a relatively easy plant to care for, it prefers humid and shaded environments, so it is important to maintain the constantly moist soil without allowing it to become boggy. It can be grown both indoors and in partial shade in gardens or courtyards. It is also important to provide good drainage to avoid waterlogging around the roots.
Kangaroo fern can be propagated by dividing rhizomes or by sowing spores. Propagation through division is the most common and simple method.
