M. adansonii is one of the most widespread
Monstera . It is found from Mexico to Brazil throughout the Neotropics, there are numerous forms, all different in some characteristics. However, the boundaries between these forms, or subspecies, are often very fluid and classification is not always easy. This one we propose has the typical shape, also known as "Monkey Mask", it remains rather small, with leaves about 15 cm long.
This plant loves a lot of light, but not full midday sun, it prefers a position with bright but indirect light, for example, positioned near a west/east oriented window or positioned slightly to the side near a south window. This species will only form its adult leaves if it has enough light and a support to climb on. You can also use the so-called "mossy brace", which retains more moisture. In any case, the location should be chosen so that there is enough upward space for climbing.
This plant comes from a tropical climate and naturally grows best in tropical temperatures and humidity. However, it is also very tolerant of "normal" conditions in an apartment.
It should not be lower than 15°C at night and at least 20°C during the day. It must not be exposed to temperatures above 30°C for prolonged periods.
In winter it should be protected from the dry air of the heating to avoid unsightly dry edges of the leaves, the substrate should never dry out completely, but neither should it create stagnation so as not to rot the roots, so it is better to water a little less, and in the meantime leave dry at least the surface of the substrate. The time needed varies depending on the location, the size of the pot and also the season.
Irrigation both from above and below (through a saucer or similar) is possible and equally effective, it can be done with moderately hard tap water, rainwater or distilled water. Transplant it into a very airy, acidic (pH less than 7), nutrient-poor mix (to mimic rainforest soil). For this purpose, you can use a special substrate consisting of pieces of bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, coconut fiber and Xaxim.
