This tropical plant ( lycopodium ) comes from the islands of Southeast Asia and is known by several names. The accepted name (according to PPG 1) is Phlegmariurus nummulariifolius , but the old name, Huperzia nummulariifolia, is found in most sources.

Whatever the name, this beautiful spore plant is a real eye-catcher in every tropical terrarium. In nature it grows epiphytically on larger trees and hangs from them. It can reach considerable lengths, around 2 metres. However, as it grows rather slowly and can be easily cut, it is not a problem in the terrarium due to its size.

This lycopodium grows epiphytically in nature, meaning it should be potted, in sphagnum moss or coconut flakes, similar to orchids. It is possible to fix it to the rear wall of the terrarium if it is always humid or directly to a branch. Keep in mind that the light higher up in the terrarium may be too strong!

It likes warm temperatures above 20°C and high humidity above 80%. It should be as bright as possible but protected from direct sunlight. Direct sun combined with insufficient humidity can quickly lead to dehydration. Since it grows slowly, it should be fertilized sparingly, for example with orchid fertilizer at half strength every 2 weeks.

In adult specimens that form strobili, the stems die after the formation of spores and are replaced by new ones! This is normal and there is nothing to worry about.
