Geogenanthus poeppigii is a very rare species native to South America with striated and wavy leaves, it belongs to the Commelia family ( Commelinaceae ). It grows at the bottom of the rainforest, often in the shade of jungle giants, with erect stems that can reach 70cm in height, with a rosette of 2-5 leaves at the end. The leaves grow to about 10cm, in exceptional cases up to 15cm. Fresh leaves appear curled and uncurl within a few days. The leaves are thick and fleshy.
The typical wavy shape of the leaf forms only some time after unrolling.
It tolerates short-term dryness, but still needs heat and humidity. It prefers constantly warm temperatures during the day above 20 °C and at night not lower than 18 °C and humidity above 60%. It can also be grown as a houseplant. The ideal exposure is a bright, semi-shaded place, without direct sunlight, for example near a window facing west or east. If kept as a houseplant, mist the leaves with a spray bottle with rain or demineralized water at least 2 times a day.
Fertilize sparingly with orchid fertilizer, at half strength, about every two weeks.
