Calanthe sp. (Garden orchid) – various colors

Calanthes are terrestrial orchids native to South Asia. Some varieties are very hardy and their range extends as far as Japan. They are resistant plants even in our area.
The flowers appear in spring/early summer on panicles of 3 and 8 flowers. They grow to a height of about 20cm. In autumn the leaves die and overwinter as pseudobulbs in the ground.
It should be placed in a partially shaded and sheltered area. Likes moist, cool, well-drained soil. In winter (after the leaves have fallen), it should be covered thickly with fallen leaves.
With the right care, it's an easy plant to care for and requires little effort.
